LETTER: Blake’s classes were a rewarding challenge

It was my honor to work with Herman Blake as a teaching assistant for African American Studies 201 in the academic year 1999-2000. I admired his leadership and enthusiasm.

Requiring a list of more than 15 carefully chosen books to read, the class was probably one of the most challenging and rewarding courses for undergraduates at Iowa State.

Blake was always able to instill the desire to learn in undergraduate students, and I have witnessed the positive transformation of several students he instructed.

Dr. Blake, I am sure the African American Studies department at Iowa State will miss your instructorship. Best of luck in your future endeavors!
