WACO, Texas (AP) — Chelsea Whitaker scored all of her career-high 20 points after halftime and had two key steals to help seventh-ranked Baylor beat No. 19 Iowa State 82-77 Saturday to stay alone atop the Big 12 standings.
Whitaker, a 26 percent shooter this season, missed all four of her shots in the first half. But the senior was 8-for-11 after that, including the layup that put the Lady Bears (21-3, 11-2) ahead to stay.
Iowa State (19-5, 9-4) lost for the third time in four games. All three of the losses were on the road.
Baylor has won 16 straight home games, the longest streak in the Big 12, including all 13 this season.
In a game matching the Big 12’s highest-scoring teams, Whitaker came up big when the Lady Bears needed it the most.
Whitaker’s three-point play with 12:24 left cut the deficit to two. Less than two minutes later, her layup made it 52-51 and put the Lady Bears ahead to stay.
After another Baylor basket, Whitaker stole the inbound pass and made two free throws after being fouled. She then stole another pass and missed the layup, but the rebound ended up in the hands of Emily Neimann, who made a short jumper for a 62-55 lead.
Steffanie Blackmon had 22 points for Baylor, and Sophia Young had 16 points with 11 rebounds. Neimann finished with 10 points.
Lyndsey Medders had 24 points for Iowa State, while Katie Robinette had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Mary Fox had 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Anne O’Neil had 11.
The Cyclones trailed by 11 in the first half before a 13-1 run. They ended the first half on a 9-1 run, and scored twice in the first 35 seconds after halftime, going ahead 32-31.
There were five ties after that until Whitaker’s go-ahead shot.
Consecutive three-point plays by Young and Blackmon broke an early 15-all tie. By the time Chameka Scott made a 3-pointer, and Blackmon had another three-point play, the Lady Bears led 30-19.
