LETTER: Pick-A-Prof would lead to more apathy

One proposal brought to light by campaigning for president/vice president of the Government of the Student Body has been the “Pick-A-Prof” initiative. Although on the surface this seems like a useful and beneficial tool for students to select a path through their courseloads here at Iowa State, appearances can be deceiving. Allowing a student to choose the easiest or most popular professors on campus leads to lower educational attainment for the student body and will haunt students when they enter the working world. Helping students to choose the path of least resistance to a degree only breeds apathy and malaise, which tend to be easy enough for me to find on my own.

Student fees and GSB resources would be better served to help the academic standing of Iowa State in some other facet.

The candidates seeking the top leadership positions within the GSB would be wise to abandon this fruitless waste of time and effort. A similar service is already available to students at www.ratemyprofessor.com.

Hopefully, the campaigns that have suggested this service as part of their platform will reconsider, and find a more useful and beneficial way to serve the student body here at Iowa State.
