The Government of the Student Body senate voted Wednesday night to cut the room and board compensation for future GSB vice presidents.

In a move to shrink its budget, the senate voted 25-4 to cut the compensation package for the GSB vice president position. Future vice presidents will receive a scholarship covering their full tuition and fees and a $3,000 compensation for room and board costs. In past years, the vice president received $6,000 in room and board compensation, as well as a tuition scholarship.

The stipend for vice president was reduced to reflect the decrease in duties throughout the years, said Vice President Will Rock.

The original bill proposed that the vice president choose between a tuition scholarship or room and board. Off-campus senator Jacob Larson said the original structure of the bill discriminated against out-of-state students because with either option, the cost for an out-of-state student would be greater than that for an in-state student.

The option costing each student the least amount of money still would be about $4,000 more for the out-of-state student, Larson said.

Rock was one of the authors of the bill and also wrote a similar bill that failed to pass last February, before his inauguration into the executive office. He said the original bill was an attempt to get the senate to decrease the GSB budget by cutting staff funding.

The GSB president and finance director receive both scholarship and room and board compensation.
