Gymnasts vaulting with a vengeance

Mention the University of Oklahoma to the members of the ISU women’s gymnastics team, and fire immediately appears in their eyes — they have a score to settle.
Flashback to last year’s Big 12 Championships.
After a brilliant team effort, the conference-undefeated Cyclones could only watch as the Sooners, who had not won a conference meet in the regular season, tumbled away with the championship crown, edging the Cyclones by 0.025 of a point.
Less than a year after the gut-wrenching loss, the No. 9 Cyclones said Friday is the night they are ready to carry out their revenge on the seventh-ranked Sooners.
“After only losing by 0.025, there is definitely a hunger to beat them,” said team co-captain Erin Dethloff. “We haven’t lost at home this season and we want to keep that [streak] going.”
The Cyclones own a nine-meet home winning streak, but the Sooners return to Ames knowing they were the last team to overpower Hilton Magic — in 2003, they upended the Cyclones in Ames 196.95-196.15.
Likewise, Oklahoma will be seeking vengeance of its own, looking to repay the Cyclones for ending the Sooners’ 14-meet home winning streak last season in Norman, 196.775-195.675.
Coach K.J. Kindler said the Cyclones must be at their best to notch the win, as the teams match up point-for-point.
“The similarities [between the teams] far outweigh the differences,” Kindler said, noting that both teams feature four strong all-arounders and average within one-tenth of each other in scoring on all events.
Though the Cyclones will attempt to be perfect all around, Dethloff said the team will have to turn in season-best performances on beam and floor to stay competitive with the Sooners, who rank above the Cyclones on both events.
“On floor, we’ve had a bunch of not perfect landings,” Dethloff said. “Going into the last event [floor], we’re going to have to be strong, especially since the judges will have seen their routines right before.”
With both teams coming off three wins in a row, Kindler said the meet promises to be nothing short of intense.
The battle begins at 7 p.m. Friday in Hilton Coliseum, where it is ISU Student Night.
All ISU students will be admitted free of charge by showing their ISU cards.
