GSB to vote on funding student-designed mural
February 23, 2005
The Government of the Student Body Senate plans to vote Wednesday on funding a student-designed mural.
Tony Borich, College of Design senator, proposed the bill to allocate $6,500 from the capital projects account to ISU facilities planning and management for the construction of a mural with the theme of “Unity.”
The bill said the mural was approved three years ago for placement at the east entrance to the College of Design building.
Borich said the theme was selected to celebrate the relationship between ISU students and the Ames community.
The total cost for the project is estimated at $16,500. Funding for the mural has been received from the Design Council, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the College of Design dean’s office.
A timeline submitted with the bill did not include an expected completion date.
John Tillo, off-campus senator, and David Tillinghast, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences senator, plan to introduce a bill requesting $1,920 from the student appreciation account to fund a Battle of the Bands event with radio station KURE 88.5 FM.
Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger said the event is scheduled for the weekend of April 1, but the date may change.
Kyle Perkins, vice speaker of the senate, and James Vogl, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences senator, plan to introduce a bill to change GSB bylaws to formally include the traditional GSB motion “to Pogge.”
According to the bill, the motion is not a recognized part of parliamentary procedure or the GSB bylaws, but has been used in the past to add sponsors to popular legislation and was started by former GSB senator Mike Pogge.
If the bill passes, the “motion to Pogge a bill” will require an introduction, second and a unanimous vote of consent to be adopted. When a Pogge is approved, a roll call vote will be taken and all senators voting affirmative on the bill will automatically become listed sponsors of the legislation.
GSB has used the motion this semester to add sponsors on the resolution supporting the Board of Regents Partnership for Transformational Excellence that was sent to the Iowa Legislature.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
