Paintball Club’s GSB request may fire debate over funding

The Government of the Student Body plans to vote Wednesday on whether to distribute funding that would send the ISU Paintball Club to Arizona.

If approved, the bill would allocate $1,609 for travel costs for 15 members from the ISU Paintball Club to compete in a match on Feb. 25 against Arizona State’s paintball team. The match would be the first official National Collegiate Paintball Association event held in Arizona.

GSB Vice President Will Rock said he expects debate on the bill because GSB allocated the ISU Paintball Club $2,794 for a trip to the Collegiate World Cup in 2004.

“There’s concern about funding such a large amount for trips two years in a row,” he said.

Dan Becker, GSB treasurer, said there is also concern about the funding because the senate discretionary account used to fund student trips and other approved items has only about $5,100 remaining for allocations until the next GSB session.

Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger said a new bill should be introduced to allocate $19,817 from the GSB capital project account for new equipment for the KURE 88.5 FM student radio station. The request includes $14,333 for a new transmitter to replace the station’s damaged transmitter. KURE receives funding through GSB and the Inter-Residence Hall Association.

Ryan Doll, Towers Residence Association senator, said he plans to file a petition for an city of Ames special election in April.

The vote could change one of the Ames City Council seats from a four-year term to a two-year term.

Doll said two-year terms could give students more opportunities to be involved with the City Council.

The senate voted 27-0 Wednesday to approve a resolution saying ISU students supported the special election.

The petition requires 463 signatures, but Doll said he expects to get more than 4,000 signatures to show the city that students are active community members whose voices matter.

The senate will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
