The One and Only Typicals are anything but conventional

Rob Lombardi

A passed out bassist lays sprawled across the floor of a Midwestern living room, the self-proclaimed winner of the “Drinking Championship of Omaha.”

It’s just a typical night along a cross-country tour for The One and Only Typicals, or The O.A.O.T’s, a Los Angeles band looking to demonstrate its power pop-punk muscle at the Bali Satay House in Ames.

While its name suggests otherwise, The O.A.O.T’s offer more than just the standard mold.

“We’re throwback … punk with great harmonies,” says guitarist Matt Garapolo.

That sound is reflected back from past rock pioneers such as The Jam and The Who.

“You hear people talk about the Sex Pistols and all that shit, but no one mentions the great American bands,” says Garapolo.

The road can sometimes be as inviting as a living room floor, but luckily The O.A.O.T’s are part of Kiss or Kill, a gathering of bands that support each other through word-of-mouth and touring. Fans of other bands in the collective support the O.A.O.T’s simply for belonging to the Kiss or Kill namesake. Pyrocracker, a local band playing with The O.A.O.T’s on Thursday, strives to see that kind of support locally.

“We were talking about creating some kind of committee to help communicate with other Ames bands,” says Pyrocracker member Brandon Bohlen.

By staying informed, they hope to stay on top of the best places to rock out with their proverbial … guitars out.

It’s a commandment among rockers — great bands need great places to play. Along their three month national tour, The O.A.O.T’s have been feverishly booking as many venues as possible, Garapolo says, including the legendary rock club CBGBs in New York City.

“The phone call to CBGBs took literally 5 minutes,” says Garapolo. “They said they liked our stuff and that was it. Then we have places outside Atlanta that we still can’t get a hold of for five weeks, it’s ridiculous.”

With all the rigorous touring across the country, the buzz generated may just have paid off in spades. The band’s single “On and On” was featured on the WB’s “Jack and Bobby,” while an upcoming episode of ABC’s new Sunday night drama “Grey’s Anatomy” will feature its song “Dance.” Both songs can be found on its new 13-song LP “Typical.”

The O.A.O.T’s are garnering international appeal as well, getting airplay from radio stations in Portugal and Italy.

For now, though, home is where the heart is.

“We’re having a blast,” Garapolo says.
