Story County supervisors to review keg, drug laws
February 15, 2005
The Story County Board of Supervisors will review proposals for ordinances concerning keg registration and sales of over-the-counter cold medicine at its meeting Tuesday.
The board passed the first reading of an ordinance
to restrict the availability of cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, like Sudafed, at its last meeting.
The restriction of pseudoephedrine, one of the key ingredients in manufacturing methamphetamine, is part of a nationwide movement to cut meth use.
Several bills are being debated before the Iowa Legislature and are scheduled for votes.
“There’s a lot of national discussion about methamphetamines,” said Jane Halliburton, chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors.
“This is something that we can do locally,” Halliburton said. “We hope that the state does too because we think we need consistency.”
Twenty-three other states, including South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma have passed similar ordinances. Iowa does not have such a law.
The board also passed the first reading of an ordinance that would track keg purchases in an attempt to discourage underage drinking.
Halliburton said after each ordinance is presented at the meeting, the board and public will then have the opportunity to ask questions and offer input in a public hearing.
“With issues of this significance, we wanted to have public hearings that would be at a time and place that was convenient for citizens,” Halliburton said.
The board will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 900 6th St., Nevada.
