Strong team performance leads gymnasts to victory
January 24, 2005
Following last week’s hit-and-miss loss to fourth-ranked Alabama, the No. 15 ISU women’s gymnastics team was in search of a confidence booster to keep the season moving on track.
The Cyclones (2-1, 1-0) got that boost on Saturday by setting a season-high overall team score with a blowout win over No. 23 Minnesota, 195.850-192.450.
“Everybody was incredibly confident and it showed in our gymnastics,” said all-arounder Jade Kvach. “Last week’s practices really paid off.”
The Cyclones outscored the Gophers on every event and swept the individual awards on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
Leading the team were all-arounders Janet Anson, Laura-Kay Powell, Erin Dethloff and Kvach, with Anson, Powell and Dethloff finishing first, second and third in the all around, respectively (39.300, 39.175 and 39.125).
“Overall, I think it was a huge team effort,” said head coach K.J. Kindler. “We have four all-arounders, but six [gymnasts] make an event; it’s those people who fill the other two spots that round out our team and make it as great as it is.”
One individual event contributor was co-captain Kacey Oiness, who entered the uneven bars lineup in place of injured sophomore Katie Lasher. Oiness scored a 9.725 to begin the competition, which pushed the Cyclones to a season-high team score on the event.
“We’re upset to have Katie out because she’s a very good contributor,” Oiness said. “But I was excited when I started everyone out on bars with a big routine.”
The bars team displayed improvement from their three falls last week by hitting five of six routines on Saturday. Kvach, who fell last week, posted a career-high 9.850 to win the event, followed by a second-place tie between Dethloff and Powell (9.825). Anson finished fourth with a 9.80.
On vault, all-Big 12 vaulter Jessica Oney hit a 9.60 vault in her first competition back from injury. The team posted solid scores on the event, with Anson finishing in a first-place tie with Minnesota’s Carolyn Yernberg (9.825), while Powell and Kvach tied for third (9.75).
In the final rotations, sophomore Ashley Alden led the team with two big routines, despite suffering physically from an allergic reaction.
Alden posted a 9.825 on the floor and the beam to finish second in both events.
On beam, Alden shared second place with Anson and Dethloff, while Powell took first with a 9.875. Joining Alden on the awards stand for the floor exercise was Anson, who finished in first (9.85), and Dethloff and Oiness who finished in a third-place tie (9.80).
