Students protest president’s policies as he is sworn in

More than 100 protesters gathered at the corner of Welch Avenue and Lincoln Way on Thursday evening to express their frustration with President Bush, after his second-term inauguration earlier in the day.

Members from the Ames High Progressive Club and the ISU Catalyst Club stretched down the sidewalk, joined by ISU students and Ames community members.

Protesters held up signs while people passing by acknowledged the group with continuous honks, cheers and boos.

“The values of ISU students are not the same values that the Bush administration has,” said Luke Gran, junior in biology. “We’re here as a reminder of those failed policies.”

He added that elections are not the end of the fight to change policy.

Signs reading, “Bush lied, they died,” “Fight AIDS, not Iraqi citizens” and “One bad term doesn’t deserve another” were among the many signs raised in the crowd.

Gran said the ISU Catalyst Club is a progressive group that was recently developed to better communicate the projects of the progressive cause to ISU students, the Ames community and the state of Iowa.
