Wrestlers ease by sixth-ranked Oklahoma
January 31, 2005
Bobby Douglas called it “one of the most important matches of [Nate] Gallick’s career.”
Iowa State’s top-ranked Nate Gallick defeated Oklahoma’s second-ranked Teyon Ware at 141 pounds Sunday to jump-start the Cyclones to a 30-6 win over the Sooners at Hilton Coliseum.
Gallick and Ware dueled it out in the first period, neither scoring until Gallick struck with less than four seconds left.
He scored a two-point takedown with 13 seconds left in the third to secure the 6-3 win.
“I tried to take my time and set up my shots, and try not to give up any points,” Gallick said.
Douglas, Iowa State’s head coach, said Gallick made the right moves at the right time.
“Gallick went out and wrestled his plan and it worked out; he had to score and he did,” Douglas said.
“This is the best match he’s wrestled all year.”
The two teams battled each other for the lead early in the match, but after Gallick’s big win, there appeared to be no looking back for Douglas and the Cyclones.
“Any time you put 30 on the board against Oklahoma, it’s been a good night,” Douglas said.
In the last home meet of their 2004-05 schedule, senior Scott Coleman got things started early for the Cyclones, winning the afternoon’s first match in the heavyweight category.
Oklahoma’s Sam Hazewinkel responded by defeating Iowa State’s Grant Nakamura at 125 pounds.
Nakamura, the eighth-ranked wrestler at his weight, lost 7-4 to top-ranked Hazewinkel.
The Cyclones caught a break after Gallick’s performance by securing wins at 149 and 174 pounds because of Oklahoma forfeits.
The Cyclones struck again at 184 pounds when second-ranked Kurt Backes won 4-3 against Oklahoma’s Justin Dyer.
Iowa State suffered its second loss of the afternoon at 197 pounds when Iowa State’s Trevor Smith was defeated by Oklahoma’s Joel Flaggert.
The third-ranked Cyclones finish off the season on the road with matches in Columbia, Mo. against Missouri and Lincoln, Neb. against Nebraska.
