Track and field sprints to multiple victories

Iowa State won numerous individual titles during the weekend ISU Open, led by several surprising standout performances.

The highlight of Friday night was Tony Stewart winning the weight throw with a distance of 58 feet 7 1/2 inches, with teammate Kendall Fogle finishing second with a throw of 54-1 3/4.

“I was really pleased,” Stewart said. “It was a personal record by a foot from last season, and it was my best of this season by three feet.”

Stewart will compete in the weight throw during the indoor season instead of the shot put. During the outdoor season, he competes in hammer throw and discus.

Iowa State also placed well in the distance medley, taking first with an unattached team at 9:57.5.

The ISU “A” team of Ryan Pence, Abraham Rotich, Craig Cartier and Corey Ylinen ran a 10:00.32.

Distance coach Corey Ihmels said he was pleased with his distance squad’s performance.

“Abe hasn’t trained that long — he’s been hurt. I’m happy with his 400 leg,” Ihmels said.

On Saturday, Ylinen won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:26.67.

Teammates Cartier and Joris De Vulder followed with times of 8:30.22 and 8:35.62, respectively.

It was Ylinen’s first win at Iowa State and a personal record.

“My old personal record was at the Big 12 conference meet last year, so I am kind of a month ahead of schedule this year,” Ylinen said.

Ihmels said he was happy to see Ylinen and Cartier step up as the senior leaders for the distance runners.

“I think those guys will be leaders for both indoor and outdoor season for the track team,” Ihmels said.

“As a whole, it was nice to see them come to the fore as seniors.”

Jared Graham won the 600-yard run with a time of 1:11.37.

Jenny Mockler was the highlight for the women, winning the mile in 4:58.6 and the 1,000-meter run in 2:56.48.

Mockler was competing unattached and is considering redshirting because of a knee injury.

“I have had an inflamed knee joint, so I have been doing most of my training in the pool,” she said.

Women’s head coach Dick Lee said he was not sure the day before the meet if he would run Mockler.

“After two weeks, we’ll see if we want to redshirt her,” Lee said.

“She had a very good day; it was a personal record in the mile for her. She has been primarily an 800- and 1,000-meter runner for the past two years.

“It has been her first year focusing on the mile, and a very good start for her,” he said.

Lee said he was also excited about Priya Hoze winning the women’s triple jump with a distance of 39-5 1/4.

“She was frustrated because she could have had some really good jumps that she fouled in,” Lee said. “She has a good chance to jump over 40 feet this year in the triple jump.”

Another win for the women’s team was Sara Boisen in the 600-yard run, with a time of 1:24.06.

The next meet for the Cyclones is the Panther Classic at Northern Iowa on Feb. 4.
