New food court restaurants will offer healthier options

Students who need to grab a bite to eat in the Memorial Union food court will have new, healthier options starting Monday with the opening of three new restaurants.

Sunset Strips will replace Chick-Fil-A and will offer several chicken dishes. Casa Ortega has been replaced with Fresh Burrito Works. The third new restaurant, The Greek Odyssey Cafe, will serve Greek entries, including gyros.

Chick-Fil-A and Casa Ortega were closed by ISU Dining because of low customer traffic, said Teresa Krebs, manager of food services. While the change is primarily one of economic concern, there are some other benefits, like healthier choices for patrons.

“We’re trying to upscale and come up with something we thought would be more in demand for our customers,” Krebs said. “There are some healthy choices in all of them.”

Janell Meyer, assistant director of campus dining services, said the new restaurants will be managed by ISU Dining, although two of the restaurants, Sunset Strips and The Greek Odyssey Cafe, are chains.

“The Fresh Burrito Works is our concept,” Meyer said.

The opening of The Greek Odyssey Cafe will expand dining choices by offering a type of food not previously offered, she said. The cafe will serve traditional beef and lamb gyros, in addition to chicken gyros, she said. The cafe will also serve Greek specialty foods like kebobs.

Although traditional gyro meat is generally fatty, the chicken gyros and kebobs the cafe offers are lower calorie, said Sally Barclay, ISU food science and human nutritional clinician.

“The new Sunset Strips, which is replacing Chick-Fil-A, will have some grilled chicken options,” Barclay said.

The grilled chicken dishes will certainly be healthier than the fried chicken, Barclay said. Sunset Strips will serve chicken sandwiches, strips, bites and wings.

Fresh Burrito Works will also offer healthier dining options.

“There had been Casa Ortega in the food court, and we wanted to update it and put in more fresh Mexican food,” Meyer said.

She said because of the vegetables, lean meat and low fat vinaigrette dressing used in the burritos, Fresh Burrito Works will offer some healthy entrees.
