Security key in donating to victims of tsunami
January 11, 2005
In light of recent concerns about the security of donations to victims of last month’s tsunami in Asia, volunteers on campus hope special boxes and booths will alleviate the fears of people wanting to help with relief efforts.
With numerous organizations taking donations, the fear of scams is a reality that concerns many.
Alison Lima, who directs the Tsunami Relief Project, has — along with other ISU student groups — been working to ensure the security of donations through cooperation with the Lincoln Way chapter of the American Red Cross.
One of the ISU administration’s biggest concerns in approving a relief effort on campus was the security and safety of the money raised, Lima said.
To help ensure security, all volunteers involved in the collection efforts will wear special pins while collecting money.
Doug Yetman, executive director of the Lincoln Way chapter of the American Red Cross, said surveys and ratings of organizations is something to research before donating.
Yetman said the Red Cross was among two aid organizations that received an A-plus.
“We’ve been given assurances from senior Red Cross members that money donated is safe,” he said.
There are two ways to donate to tsunami victims through the American Red Cross. The first is a general fund called the American Red International Response Fund. The other method allows the donor to specify a certain relief effort to which they would like to donate. Yetman said donors cannot simply specify a particular country or region.
With donation scams already occurring, Yetman encourages people to be aware of where their money is going.
