Reigning supreme

The No. 10 Cyclones stated their case as the top gymnastics squad in the state at their home quadrangular meet Friday, annihilating intrastate rival Iowa 195.575-192.400 and sweeping the top-three podium spots on each event individually.
Division III teams Hamline and Gustavus Adolphus, both of St. Peter, Minn., finished third (175.075) and fourth (173.750), respectively.
Head coach K.J. Kindler said she was very happy with her team’s performance and its ability to focus despite the added noise and mental distractions of having four teams competing on the floor at the same time. She would have liked to seen a few more of the team’s small misstates corrected, though.
“We’re still reaching for that 196 [overall team score], and we hope to get it in Denver next week,” Kindler said. “However, we’re going to need to clean up landings if we want to come way with that win, as they are currently ranked above us.”
“We just came to hit routines,” all-arounder Janet Anson said. “Staying consistent in the beginning [of the season] is good, and we definitely stuck with what we did the last couple of meets.”
“Vault landings were a little off tonight,” Kindler said. “It wasn’t the smoothest start we’ve ever had.”
Despite the errors, the Cyclones posted the event’s top four scores. Anson finished first (9.875), junior Erin Dethloff second (9.85), junior Laura-Kay Powell third (9.80) and redshirt freshman Jade Kvach fourth (9.725). After vault, the Cyclones put together a season-high team total on uneven bars (49.150).
Dethloff stuck a brand-new and more difficult dismount to lead the team with a first-place finish (9.90), followed by Powell (9.875) and Kvach (9.825).
Halfway through, the Cyclones traveled to the balance beam, which Kindler said has been “the team’s most consistent and strongest event.”
Iowa State turned in three solid top-three performances on the event: Kvach, first (9.775), sophomore Ashley Alden, second (9.750), and Anson, third (9.70).
Kvach said the Cyclones used the home-crowd advantage to fuel their floor routines at the end of the meet.
Anson used the energy to unleash a more difficult tumbling pass to start off her routine, which earned her first place on the event (9.875).
She was followed in a three-way second-place tie by teammates Dethloff, Kvach and Powell (9.825).
In the all-around, Kvach set a career-high mark of 39.150 to finish third, behind Dethloff in second (9.175) and Anson in first (9.200). The meet marked Anson’s third all-around win of the season.
The Cyclones’ win over the Hawkeyes also tightens the race for the 2004-2005 Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series title. The ISU gymnasts earned two points in the series, reducing Iowa’s lead to 9-6.
On Feb. 19, the Cyclones take on the Hawkeyes in Iowa City for a chance to earn two additional series points.
An ISU victory there would bring the schools within one point of each other, leaving it to the universities’ softball teams to battle it out in April for the series’ final two points.
The Cyclones jump to 5-1 (1-0 Big 12) on the season, and travel to Colorado on Saturday to take on the No. 9 Denver Pioneers.
