With a playoff berth still up in the air, the No. 12 ISU men’s hockey club knew it needed a sweep against the Oklahoma Sooners, and that’s exactly what they earned.

The Cyclone’s won a 5-4 nailbiter Friday and followed Saturday with a 7-4 win.

Friday night’s game began with a bang, as Jason Brown scored five minutes into the game, giving Iowa State a 1-0 lead. The lead was expanded in the second period when Jayson Peterson scored, putting the Cyclones up 2-0.

Oklahoma scored two quick goals to tie the game, but David Moline recaptured the lead for the Cyclones just a minute later. Oklahoma tied it one minute after that, knotting the score at three at the end of the second period.

The Sooners continued their momentum, scoring with seven minutes left in the game to make it 4-3.

During a Sooner power play, Iowa State’s Brooks Clinton tied the game at four. Less than 30 seconds later, senior Travis Fast got a breakaway and scored the team’s second short-handed goal, giving the Cyclones a 5-4 lead.

“I was kind of nervous as I broke away, but getting a short-handed goal was huge, and really gave us the momentum for the rest of the game,” Fast said.

The Cyclones held on for a 5-4 win.

The Cyclones got on the board two minutes into the game when Allen Raushel scored on a power play, making it 1-0. Oklahoma then scored two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead.

From there the game belonged to Iowa State. Scott Hagen, Mike Paulsen and Fast scored second-period goals for the Cyclones, giving Iowa State a 4-2 advantage at the end of the second.

Iowa State continued its physical dominance, as Moline scored just 90 seconds into the third period. An Oklahoma goal made it 5-3, but the Cyclones responded again.

Hagen scored his second goal and Brent Popadych added one of his own to make the final score 7-3. Hagen scored two goals and added an assist.

“It’s good to be back with the guys, and was really nice to help out getting two goals,” Hagen said. “We used our size really well against them, and it helped with our depth, we were able to wear them down.”

Head coach Alan Murdoch said he was pleased with his team’s performance this weekend.

“It was a big weekend for us; [it] should help with our tournament standing,” Murdoch said.

“I’m just pleased with the way we played, and we need to keep it up next weekend at Eastern Michigan.”
