Homemade gifts for the holiday season
December 10, 2004
Unique holiday gifts ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to homemade soap and jewelry can be found in one place this winter: The farmers’ market.
The winter farmers’ market, held from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at US Bank, 405 Main St., is home to more than a handful of vendors selling their crops and crafts.
“If you’re looking for a gift, but you don’t know what you need, the farmers’ market is a great place to come,” said Angela Moore, Main Street Cultural District director. “They have unique things everyone will love.”
Moore said last year — the market’s first year — each vendor set up at a different business downtown. This year, she said, all vendors are in one location.
“It’s one-stop shopping for all of the farmers’ markets, and US Bank was excited to participate,” Moore said. “As a cultural district, we’re trying to have as many arts and cultural things as possible.”
Massages are also offered at the market by a licensed massage therapist.
“It’s really nice if you’re shopping and you want a quick massage,” Moore said.
The winter market combines vendors from the North Grand Mall farmers’ market and the downtown farmers’ market, said Amy Jones, Main Street Cultural District promotions chairwoman.
Although it is winter, Jones said there is still a good selection of products for sale.
Duane Black, owner of Black’s Heritage Farm near Ames, has been involved with farmers’ markets off and on for about 20 years.
“There are different types of products because of the time of year,” Black said. He plans to bring popcorn, corn and winter squash Saturday.
Other items for sale are jams, jellies, apples and baked goods — including low-sugar and heart-healthy items, Moore said.
She said there are plans to make the market an annual event, but details are still changing as they find out what works and what doesn’t.
