Men’s basketball bounces back with win
December 13, 2004
With the foul taste of a loss to Iowa still in its mouth, the ISU men’s basketball team moved rebounded Sunday with a 92-75 win over Howard.
Jared Homan led Iowa State with 17 points and 13 rebounds, his second double-double of the weekend.
Homan has reached double figures in points and rebounds four times this year and has scored more than 10 points in all seven games.
“He’s been terrific all season,” ISU head coach Wayne Morgan said.
“I couldn’t be prouder of him and the effort he puts forth. I couldn’t be happier with the leadership he has provided to our younger guys.”
Curtis Stinson added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help the Cyclones move to 5-2 on the year.
“I didn’t want to go the whole break without a whole game — still thinking about Iowa,” Homan said. “I think to start the game I was still thinking about Iowa. You have to push that out of your mind and focus on the future.”
Reggie George scored a career-high 10 points, while Will Blalock — who is averaging more than 15 per game — was held to eight points. He did dish out five assists, including a lob that Rahshon Clark slammed home with two hands.
Cliffone Ault led Howard with 34 points, the second time in three games Iowa State has allowed someone to score more than 30.
Howard shot 40 three-pointers, making just 10 of those shots.
“I thought we did a good job of contesting their threes during the course of the game,” Morgan said. “It was obvious they had a couple guys who could really shoot the ball.”
Ault connected on 5 of 14 shots from long range, while Darek Mitchell added four.
“I think they knew that was the way they would have to try to beat us,” Homan said.
Iowa State connected on 3 of 9 threes, with John Neal hitting two.
While Howard made its living behind the 3-point line, Iowa State did much of its damage from the free throw line.
The Cyclones went 25 of 34 from the charity stripe, drawing 24 fouls.
After a slow start by both teams, Iowa State jumped to a 10-point lead at halftime. That lead ballooned to as much as 22 late in the second half.
The Cyclones scored just three field goals in the first five minutes of the game before beginning to put the game away midway through the half.
A jumper by Aaron Agnew put Iowa State up by 16 with under three minutes to play in the first. Howard came back, cutting its halftime deficit to 10.
The Cyclones will take Finals Week off before welcoming Wagner to Ames on Sunday.
