Scoring at will, the No. 9-ranked ISU men’s hockey club scored 21 goals in its weekend sweep of St. Cloud State.

In Friday night’s game, the Cyclones came out firing, and the Huskies were powerless to stop them.

The Cyclones scored five first-period goals despite only out-shooting the Huskies 13-12.

The Huskies scored at the buzzer and made the score 5-1 at the end of one period.

The Cyclones came out just as hot in the second period, holding St. Cloud State to one goal as they increased their lead to 10-2 at the 40-minute mark.

Things didn’t get much better for St. Cloud State in the third period as the Cyclones added three more goals, making the final score 13-2.

Head coach Alan Murdoch said he was very pleased with his team’s performance.

“We were rolling tonight,” Murdoch said. “I think we’re peaking right now, and it’s good to do it right before we go into the holidays.”

Senior Travis Fast, who scored two goals, agreed with Murdoch and said the team is playing really well right now.

“It was a total momentum shift for us,” Fast said.

Traveling to Mason City for its second game to draw out new fans on Saturday, the Cyclones didn’t disappoint.

Robert Beck scored his first goal as a Cyclone just over a minute into the game, and the Cyclones never looked back.

Iowa State went on to take the game 8-4.

“Anytime you can get a sweep over a Minnesota team, you’re doing pretty good,” Murdoch said. “I’m really happy with the team’s play this weekend.”

Allen Raushel, who scored three goals in the series, agreed with Murdoch.

“This was a great series for us, and it gives us good momentum going into Christmas,” Raushel said.

Up next for the Cyclones is the University of Minnesota next weekend in Ames.
