First-half surge helps Hawkeyes control the game
December 2, 2004
IOWA CITY — The game looked close for seven and a half minutes. Then, Iowa turned an 11-10 deficit into a 36-13 lead in just under eight minutes in the first half.
“They had us on our heel a little bit. Kind of like a fight, they came out punching, hit us on the nose right off the bat and staggered us,” head coach Bill Fennelly said. “They didn’t knock us out, and we were rope-a-doping for a little while to hang on, but it wasn’t enough.”
The run started when Morgan Kasperek hit a jumper in the lane to take a 12-11 lead for the Hawkeyes. For the next eight minutes, Iowa State would not hit a field goal.
It seemed like the whole Hawkeye team was scoring during Iowa’s run. Crystal Smith notched seven points, Jenna Armstrong six, Jamie Cavey five and Kasperek four. Johanna Solverson and Tiffany Reedy contributed two each.
“It seemed like we were taking the ball out of bounds left and right,” said ISU guard Anne O’Neil.
“We kind of got caught standing around, and I think in some situations, we were afraid to shoot and afraid to move,” Fennelly said about Iowa’s run. “We had to get something around the basket, and we couldn’t, so then we relied on jump shots.”
But the jump shots weren’t falling, even when Iowa State could get the ball in the air. It gave away six turnovers in the eight-minute span.
Lisa Kriener was the lone Cyclone to score during the stretch, making two free throws.
