Veishea commission releases its final report
December 1, 2004
Members of the Commission on Improving Relations Among ISU Students, the University, the City of Ames and the Ames Community released their final report Tuesday.
The report, which was given to ISU President Gregory Geoffroy, Government of the Student Body President Sophia Magill and Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco, focuses on creating a sense of “one community.”
In a letter to Geoffroy, Magill and Tedesco contained within the report, members of the commission wrote, “The idea of one community is central to all our recommendations. While some recommendations focus on university-student relations, others on relations between long-term neighbors (year-round residents) and short-term neighbors (students), and many areas in between, all can be applied to our community as a whole.”
Magill said although she hasn’t read the report in its entirety, she believes the recommendations are aimed in the right direction.
“I think that it’s a positive direction,” Magill said. “We’re all vested players, and the more we’re working as a group, the more beneficial it is for everyone.”
Magill said she is pleased the report focuses on community relations.
“One thing I heard from a lot of people last spring was that there seemed to be a disconnect between the city and the students and the university and the students,” she said.
She said the commission is pushing for everyone to work together.
“The next step is talking about some sort of implementation of the ideas and making positive changes occur,” Magill said. “I’m interested in anything else students have to say about these issues.”
The commission gave 13 recommendations for ways the city, the university and the students can work together.
“We believe that vigorous effort to strengthen our sense of community can help reclaim the rich and valued tradition of Veishea,” the commission wrote.
