McCarney honored as Big 12 Coach of the Year
December 2, 2004
The postseason awards for the Big 12 Conference have begun to roll in for the Cyclones.
After leading Iowa State to a 6-5 record and a share of the Big 12 North title, head coach Dan McCarney was named Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year by the league’s coaches, the conference announced Monday.
Colorado’s Gary Barnett was named Big 12 Coach of the Year by the Associated Press on Tuesday.
McCarney, in his 10th year as the Cyclone coach, led Iowa State to its first title of any kind since 1912 with a 4-4 conference mark.
He is the first ISU coach to receive coach of the year honors from either the media or coaches since Earle Bruce in 1976 and 1977.
“I’m surprised and it’s a very humbling honor,” McCarney said. “There are a lot of tremendous coaches and coaching staffs in the Big 12.”
“It’s a great reflection of this coaching staff, the assistants and our players. Their commitment, their dedication and resolve — that’s what it’s a reflection on.”
McCarney’s Cyclones defeated Nebraska at Jack Trice Stadium for the second time in three years while knocking off Kansas State for the first time in 10 years in Manhattan, Kan.
Iowa State is also bowl-eligible for the fourth time in five years.
“It’s a great shot for this program,” McCarney said. “This is what it’s all about. We’ve gotten some tremendous exposure along the way which is great for Iowa State University.
“We have a chance to play one more game on national television with much of the country watching. It’s nothing but a positive.”
After being picked to finish last in the Big 12 North in most polls, Iowa State lost its first three conference games of the season to move its Big 12 losing streak to 13 games.
Beginning with a last-minute win at Baylor, Iowa State ran off with four consecutive wins to earn itself a chance to play Missouri with a trip to the Big 12 Championship game on the line. Iowa State lost the battle 17-14 in overtime.
Team members Tim Dobbins, Ellis Hobbs, Cale Stubbe, Nick Leaders, Todd Blythe, Brent Curvey, Stevie Hicks, Tyson Smith and Luke Vander Sanden have all received postseason honors for the Cyclones.
