Student organization funding could be affected by new bill
November 3, 2004
A special allocations recommendations bill could affect the financial well-being of 14 student organizations requesting funding for the spring.
The Government of the Student Body finance committee’s special allocations account is set up to allow student organizations to request funding from GSB for the spring semester. This gives organizations who failed to request funds, did not fit the criteria for funding or were not in existence last spring the opportunity to still receive funding.
With this bill, the finance committee could allocate a total of $27,633 for the Special Allocations Account to 11 of the 14 listed student organizations. Leaders INspiring Connections, formerly known as Veishea Inc.; Uhuru Magazine and Descarga are among the groups requesting the highest funding, at $9,995, $9,523 and $2,764, respectively.
The other organizations recommended to receive funding include Alpha Phi Omega, APAAC, Blood Drive, Dance Marathon, Got Ignorance, Indonesian Student Association, Nepalese Student Association and UB3R-L33T.
The three remaining organizations — the ISU Fencing Club, the Marine Biology Club and Student Advisory Council — are listed to receive no funding from the Special Allocations account.
Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger said the clubs aren’t receiving funding for different reasons. Student Advisory Council is not being considered for funding because it doesn’t meet funding criteria. The ISU Fencing and Marine Biology Clubs are in different situations and will request funding from the special projects account.
Alliger said they would have a better chance of receiving funding from this account.
“Both of them are actually in a situation where they need money for capital purchases, which would be better handled by the special projects account,” Alliger said.
In addition, special allocation funding is not made available to the organizations until Jan. 1, and both clubs need the money before the end of fall semester.
