A day in the life of a young Democrat

McAndrew dials, pounds on doors

ISU Democrat member Rose McAndrew sat in a dorm room Tuesday, reviewing poll sheets, going over names and reminding those who hadn’t voted yet to get out and do it.

Those reminders came in two forms — phone calls to people across Ames and face-to-face visits for those in Friley Hall.

“Since we have a list of who voted in our precinct, when we make calls, we talk to anyone who hasn’t,” she said. “So we know when they’re lying.”

McAndrew quietly asked students if they had voted and cringed when she woke up a person who was taking a nap.

Some people weren’t welcoming to her cause, but McAndrew said it comes with the territory.

“The funny thing is the only person who’s been rude was someone I already knew,” she said. “We’re pretty much just trying to do all we can to get people to the polls while they’re still open.”

As she made her rounds through the dorm, McAndrew said she felt bad for people who hadn’t registered or aren’t going to vote.

“There are people here who have just heard it so much, but it’s unfortunate because our age group is very affected by politics,” she said.

She walked away smiling when one student said he didn’t mind all the calls and visits because what she’s doing is important.

Erica Carnes, vice president of the ISU Democrats, said the group had worked hard with the Story County Democrats’ office throughout the week to get out the vote.

“We all hate stress, but sometimes that’s what makes it fun,” Carnes said. “If it all went okay, it wouldn’t be as stressful or fun.”

Although Carnes was out of town Tuesday, ISU Democrats were out making their voices heard.
