After three straight shutout losses, the ISU women’s soccer team finished its regular season pounding in six goals against the Iowa Hawkeyes Sunday, winning 6-1 on senior day.

The Cyclones (8-11, 4-6) bounced back from a 4-0 loss to Kansas on Friday.

Against Iowa, the Cyclones were led by junior Kristina Baumann, who had two goals and two assists, and junior Amy Flores, with three assists.

Senior Kelly Burke started the scoring for Iowa State, finishing a pass from Baumann only 1:15 into the contest. Continuing its onslaught, the Cyclones logged two more goals in the first 20 minutes of play, making it 3-0.

“We decided to come out, have fun today, and do it for our seniors,” Flores said.

“We’re going to miss them when they’re gone.”

Iowa State entered halftime with a 4-0 lead, thanks to an odd redirection from a Hawkeye’s head into Iowa’s own net.

Iowa State scored twice more after the break and outshot Iowa 12-8 in the game.

Melisa Kaetterhenry scored Iowa’s only goal of the game late in the second half against ISU senior goalkeeper Karen Hasselman.

Freshmen Joanna Haig and Laura Boyer also saw time in net, with Haig making three saves, and Boyer finishing with two. Haig received credit for the win.

The Cyclone seniors honored in the match were Hasselman, Burke, midfielder Laura Schweer and defender Erin Weldon.

“My class — the junior class — has played with the seniors the longest,” Baumann said. “There’s just chemistry with them, and it was so great just to play with them all on the field.”

The coaching staff showed its appreciation for the seniors as well.

In the last minute of play, coach Rebecca Hornbacher subbed out the seniors, and they were thanked by a standing ovation from the fans in attendance.

“They have shown their commitment the past four years, ” Hornbacher said.

“They have really been great role models and examples for our players.”

Iowa allowed the second-most goals that it had all season.

“My hats off just to the whole team,” Hornbacher said. “They played with a lot of heart and a lot of passion.”

“This is a huge rivalry, in any sport,” Flores said. “Even though it’s a non-conference game today, the game meant everything in the world.”

Iowa State’s season continues as it plays in round one of the Big 12 tournament on Wednesday against No. 1 seed Kansas in San Antonio.
