Fighting Illini sink swimmers, divers
November 8, 2004
There are two ways to describe the ISU women’s swimming and diving team’s loss to the University of Illinois on Friday night: inconsistency and lack of performance.
The team lost 91-50 in Beyer Pool, despite some stellar performances, said head coach Duane Sorenson.
“We had some very good swims and some very weak swims,” Sorenson said. “For example, Lauren Breunig’s 200 [individual medley] was just incredible, and then she turned around and didn’t attack her 500 [freestyle].
“Kim Rogers’ 200 [butter]fly was very good. Her 200 IM, she got a good time, but she didn’t swim very aggressive in the beginning. Lydia Smirniotis had a great 1,000 [freestyle] but didn’t attack her [200] fly.”
Rogers, a junior, said the team knew that the meet would be close.
“We knew that we had a chance if everyone did their job, but everyone didn’t do their job,” Rogers said.
Out of the 13 events, which featured several freestyles of varying lengths, two relays, and both one- and three-meter board diving, Iowa State took first place in five, including both diving events.
Senior Katie Herman was first in the one-meter board with a score of 255.44 while fellow senior Gail Olson followed with a 254.10.
In the other diving event, Olson finished first with 251.62. Herman’s 243.75 was good enough for second.
“I was really happy with my one-meter. My three-meter needs a little work, but it still came out good,” Herman said.
The pair accumulated 26 of the team’s total points for the meet in the two events.
Even with the work Herman and Olson put forth, the team still fell behind Illinois.
“It’s hard to watch; we’re part of the team too,” Olson said.
Rogers, who took first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.22 and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:11.41), said the team’s overall performance was lacking.
“We had a couple individuals step up and do their job, but, overall, we just were not focused,” she said.
The other Cyclone swimmers who placed first were Breunig in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.25 and Smirniotis who swam the 1,000 freestyle in 10:34.07. The two relay teams took second place in both events. Maggie Peterson, Krista Fehl, Rogers and Breunig clocked 3:58.91 in the 400 medley and Brita Benson, Jenny Lindberg, Kelly Hanus, and Cassandra Nelson finished in 1:39.17 in the 200 freestyle.
Sorenson said the team learned something from their struggles with Illinois.
“We need to be more consistent race after race and just need to do a better job,” Sorenson said. “We expected more out of other people, and they didn’t step up.”
Next up for the Cyclones will be the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis on Nov. 19-21.
