Women come off the bench to give Iowa State 113-45 win
November 30, 2004
The ISU women’s basketball team followed the same formula against Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne that guided it to its first two blowout wins — score a lot of points and don’t let the other team get an open look.
The strategy worked as the women cruised to a 113-45 victory at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State broke a school record with 35 assists; it also broke two Hilton Coliseum records: scoring, with 113, and margin of victory, with 68.
“It was something we were kind of shooting for — see how many assists we could get tonight and just share the ball,” senior point guard Anne O’Neil said. “It’s team basketball — everyone gets to play and everyone gets to have fun.”
The game was never in doubt, as the Cyclones opened the game with an 18-0 run and led 56-14 at the half.
The Mastodons didn’t crack the scoreboard until Courtney Nicley made a jump shot with 12:45 left in the first half.
Brittany Wilkins paced Iowa State with 18 points in only 15 minutes on the court. O’Neil was two assists away from her first career triple-double, recording 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Lyndsey Medders chipped in 16 points and seven assists and freshman Lisa Bildeaux scored 15 points. Lisa Kriener had 13 rebounds and eight points in 14 minutes of action.
“I’ve never been in a game when the bench drops 70 points,” said head coach Bill Fennelly. “We did everything we wanted to do and got everyone involved.”
Wilkins helped Iowa State win the battle in the paint. Led by Wilkins and Bildeaux, the Cyclones outscored the Dons 48-16 in the box.
On the perimeter, the Cyclones knocked down 13 three-pointers, including three each from Medders and O’Neil.
“Everybody’s just doing an awesome job getting the ball on the inside,” Wilkins said. “When it gets cluttered in the middle, then we pass it out — and that’s definitely an advantage.”
Iowa State also used a stifling defense to force IPFW to shoot 25.7 percent from the field and commit 19 turnovers, which the Cyclones turned into 29 points.
The Cyclones face their first road test of the year Wednesday, when they travel to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m.
