Veishea commission to refine proposals
November 15, 2004
Veishea commission members will refine their recommendations on how to improve interactions between ISU students and Ames community members during their last preliminary meeting.
The Commission on Improving Relations Among ISU Students, the University, the city of Ames and the Ames Community has been discussing ways to further relations between the groups since June, said Bob Kindred, co-chairman of the commission and assistant city manager.
“A lot of the misunderstandings [between community groups] would be overcome by talking it out,” Kindred said, “rather than jumping to conclusions and assuming things.”
The preliminary recommendations brought up at the last meeting will be discussed again and refined during this meeting to present to the open forums later in the week, said William Rock, commission co-chairman and Government of the Student Body vice president.
“A lot of the recommendations overlap, so we’ll be expanding some ideas and making them more specific,” Rock said.
Said Kindred, “We still need regular policy-level communication between the City Council, ISU administration and GSB. It’s a very important step and something that hasn’t been happening but needs to.”
The refined recommendations from this meeting will be compiled with the thoughts of ISU students and Ames community members from the open forums, Kindred said. The recommendations will be finalized Nov. 29.
“It’s important to touch base with the community,” said Kindred. “We sense a need to get along with each other.”
The two open forums will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 515 Clark Ave., and at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union.
The Veishea commission meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in room 136 of the Union Drive Community Center.
