How to vote

  • You must vote in the precinct in which you live. Call the county auditor at 382-7211 to find out where to vote.
  • Be in line at a listed poll by 9 p.m.
  • Bring an ID — This includes a photo ID or a current document that has your name and address, such as a paycheck.
  • Provisional ballot — If you aren’t on the list of registered voters or your right to vote is challenged, you can cast a provisional ballot. This means it will be put in an envelope and reviewed by a special board after Election Day.
  • Disability voting — The polling places have a variety of accommodations for disabled voters, including curbside voting, where precinct workers bring a ballot to your vehicle.
  • The majority of counties use optical scans, including Story and Polk counties. Just like bubble-sheet tests, this involves completely filling in the oval next to the candidate’s name. Virtually all of the mistakes made involve improper filling, such as circling a name or filling in too many ovals.
  • If you believe that your voting rights have been violated, the statewide hotline for complaints is 1-800-SOS-VOTE.
