Boo with ZEW at ISU shows exotic animals, teaches care methods
October 28, 2004
Animals, games, costumed students and free candy will bring a taste of Halloween to the College of Veterinary Medicine this Saturday night.
The second annual Halloween fund-raiser Boo with ZEW at ISU will allow people to see exotic animals while learning the proper techniques of caring for and treating animals.
“The event is student-run,” said Beth Zehr, secretary and fundraising co-chairwoman for the Zoo Exotic and Wildlife Club. “The students bring in a variety of exotic animals for the people to see. They will also have skeletons and radiographs of exotic animals.”
Birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and many other types of animals will be present at the event. About 16 students from the Veterinary College will be bringing in their own animals.
“People of all ages can learn how to properly care for animals,” said ZEW President Aaron Sitzmann.
“Last year, my 1-year-old had a great time playing with the animals and learning how to treat them gently.”
The ZEW club decided the event should be in the fall, around Halloween, so students could get into the Halloween spirit and wear costumes.
“I enjoy seeing how excited the kids get and how much fun they have when they see the different types of animals. It really makes you feel good,” Sitzmann said.
The money raised by Boo with ZEW at ISU and the donations will help fund trips and support the speakers that are brought in for the ZEW club.
“There will not be a lot of money raised from this event. It mostly gives the ZEW club a chance to get involved and give back to the community,” Sitzmann said.
“We need to have events to help raise funds for our speakers.”
The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday in room 2226 at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
People attending the event are asked not to bring in their own animals for safety reasons.
“We want to show people the world of owning exotic pets,” Zehr said.
