More points up for grabs in Cy-Hawk series
October 28, 2004
The ISU women’s soccer team will conclude its conference schedule Friday at No. 6 Kansas before returning home Sunday to close out the regular season against in-state rival Iowa.
Iowa State (7-10, 4-5) will continue to play after this weekend in the Big 12 tournament, but its opponent is still unknown.
Kansas (15-3, 7-2) continues to be one of the toughest teams in the nation, behind the firepower of Caroline Smith, Rachel Gilfillan and Nicole Cauzillo. Smith and Gilfillan each have seven goals, while Cauzillo has four. Goalie Meghan Miller has made 78 saves on the season.
“They have a very solid defense, led by Meghan Miller,” said ISU coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “She’s just been outstanding this year.”
ISU freshman goalie Joanna Haig has made 86 saves this season and had a career game last week against Texas with 14 saves. Even with their strong defense, the Cyclones still need to get their offense on a roll again.
Despite only giving up one goal in each of their last two games, they also failed to score a goal in those games.
“Kansas is a great team, and they’re going to come out hard,” said junior forward Amy Flores. “We’re really going to knock heads on Friday.”
After its Friday match, Iowa State matches up against the Hawkeyes on Sunday.
The team’s Halloween matchup is the last game of the regular season for the Cyclones.
Iowa (1-13-2, 0-9-1 Big Ten) has struggled for wins this season, with its lone win coming in its most recent game, a 3-1 victory over Creighton. The Hawkeyes are led by Lindsey Phillips, with two goals and one assist. Six other Hawks having tallied one goal each this year.
Defensively, goalie Britta Vogele has made 116 saves in 1,364 minutes for Iowa.
Sunday’s game is senior night for the Cyclones.
“It is a fun in-state rivalry and should be a fun game,” Haig said. “We’re going to win it for the seniors.”
The Cyclones said they are looking forward to tightening up the newly created Cy-Hawk series with a win over Iowa.
After dropping this year’s football game, Iowa State trails 3-0 in Cy-Hawk points.
If Iowa State wins the soccer game, the Cyclones will pick up two points.
“We know that it’s something that our girls get really excited about,” Hornbacher said. “It is going to be a great way to honor our seniors and everything they’ve given to our program.”
After this weekend of play, the Cyclones will head to San Antonio, Texas to participate in the Big 12 Tournament for the sixth time since the team was founded in 1996.
Although their all-time tournament record stands at 0-5-1, the team looks forward to every game it plays together.
“We all have each other’s backs,” Flores said. “We’re so excited.”
The kickoff against Iowa is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the ISU soccer complex.
