Men strive for first win, travel to Purina Classic
October 10, 2004
The ISU men’s golf team is heading to St. Louis to take part in the Purina Classic on Monday and Tuesday.
The team is riding momentum from a five-places jump on the last day of the Memphis Intercollegiate tournament last week.
Iowa State was last, in 16th place, after the first two days, but finally got on its game and jumped to 11th and beat instate rival Iowa on the final day.
Leading the Cyclones is freshman Chris Baker, whose consistent play has kept himself as one of the leading scorers for the Cyclones all season.
“I just want to go out and play good golf,” Baker said.
“I want to be able to be positive over every shot and trust my game.”
The team will be competing on The Bluffs Golf Course in St. Louis, which is known to be a hilly course.
Though Baker is a freshman and hasn’t played on the course, veterans Drew Dalziel and Paul Huddle do have experience at the Purina and both will be in action this week.
Though the Cyclones’ season is still without a win, players said they’re optimistic that one is coming sometime soon.
“I think that our goal every week as a team is to win,” Baker said.
In order to be its best, the team will need to start playing the par-3s better and making birdie opportunities on par-5s.
“As a team, it is important that we all stay in the present, and we can’t let anything in the past holes affect what we are doing on the next shot,” Baker said.
“If we make a mistake, it’s important that we try our hardest to continue to play solid golf.”
Though Baker and Dalziel have been consistent at the top two positions this year, positions three, four and five still do not have permanent players.
The Purina will be an opportunity for that to happen as Huddle, Joe Cermak and Dane Odden battle it out in those positions.
