Nordic Ski Club excited for snow, winter workouts, potential races

Sure, there aren’t any mountains and downhill skiing isn’t prominent in Iowa, but, despite the lack of altitude, students can still strap on a pair of skis and take to the powder and trek across the country.

And contrary to popular belief, it isn’t just a stroll in the park.

The ISU Nordic Ski Club became an official sports club in early September. It already has 15 members who have had their first workout at Ada Hayden Heritage Park. Club president Jenny Williams and club treasurer Amy Lee Harrington worked together to start the club.

“Already the members are getting to know each other as well as joining together to get things accomplished,” Harrington said.

Nordic skiing, also known as cross-country skiing, is a good way to get a workout in the winter. The club skis mostly for fun, but some participate in races, Williams said.

“We’re working toward a goal of skiing in marathons,” she said.

Williams said she and Harrington are planning to race in two events. One is the Mora Vasaloppet ski marathon, which will take place in Mora, Minn., on Feb. 13.

Susan DeBlieck joined the club because cross-country skiing is her favorite sport.

“I really missed out on skiing last winter,” DeBlieck said. “I love that I can talk about snow and skiing with people who don’t think I am crazy for loving winter.”

As far as Williams knows, no other colleges in Iowa have Nordic ski clubs or teams.

“There’s a lot of Minnesota [teams], so we’re going to try to eventually get races against them,” Williams said.

The club plans to meet every Saturday morning and sometimes during the week. In November, members will start grooming the trails so they are able to ski when snow comes.

Williams said no experience is needed to join the club.

Sports Club Council president Reid Morris is an avid Nordic skier and said he was pleased to see the start of the club, even though Iowa doesn’t get consistent snow.

“Nordic skiing is a phenomenal activity for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and a great winter workout,” Morris said. “The club is a great way to inform athletes of all sorts to the benefits that a Nordic workout can provide.”

Nordic skiing is one of the best full-body cardiovascular workouts, he said.

“Contrary to some preconceived notions, it’s a very fast-paced aerobic activity,” Morris said.

Club member Derek Wallen is excited about the start of the club.

“I joined the Nordic ski club to be surrounded by people who share my feverish anticipation for snow and freshly groomed trails,” Wallen said.

“This is a great club for everyone, from advanced skiers to people just interested in learning. A love of winter is the only requirement.”
