ISU Motocross Club relishes the ride

The ISU Motocross Club may be your best option for motorcycle fun in Iowa. Club president Alex Sills said he believes Iowa State is the only university in Iowa with a motocross club.

“I think we’re the pioneers of this,” he said. “I don’t think other universities, like Iowa or UNI, have a motocross team or club.”

Sills started the motocross club a year ago. He put fliers around campus to see if anyone was interested and quickly got about 20 replies. There are 15 official members, and the club’s e-mail list includes about 50 people.

The fliers are how motocross club vice president Zach McVey became involved in the club.

“I thought this was a great chance to bring all the riders together to have some fun,” McVey said.

Sills said he started the club because there was no place to ride in the area.

“My initial inspiration for doing this was to try to get a track, try to get people together and get support to get a track around here,” Sills said.

“There’s just enough motocross interest around here that I think a club can be accommodated, and I think we’ve more than proven that over the last year.”

The motocross club sets one or two dates every month to go riding during the March-to-October riding season.

McVey said his favorite thing about the club is the rides.

“All aspects of the club are nice, but [my favorite] is when the club as a whole goes out and has an absolute blast,” he said.

Several of the club members participate individually in races sanctioned by the Iowa division of the American Motorcycle Association, Sills said, but many ride just for the fun of it.

“The majority of us are just joy riders,” Sills said.

The motocross club meets at 7 p.m. every Thursday in 171 Durham Center. Members discuss upcoming events, watch videos of races and talk about what has been going on.

“We talk about mechanical stuff, crazy stuff we’ve done to our bikes and crazy mishaps we’ve had on trail and tracks,” Sills said.

The final riding event of the season is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bluff Creek OHV Park near Bussey. Anyone is invited to participate in the ride, including quad riders.

The park is an abandoned strip mine, so it has pretty rugged trails, Sills said.

“This weekend, we expect to have our largest ride since the start of the club,” McVey said.

Club member Corey Goodhue said he is also excited about the ride.

“Going on club rides is great,” Goodhue said. “Racing around the track and trails with your friends is extremely rewarding. When we’re done riding, we can kick back and share our stories from the day.”
