Several ISU students will head to Des Moines in November for a residence hall leadership conference, the Inter-Residence Hall Association said at its meeting Thursday.

The Midwest Association of College and University Residence Halls, scheduled Nov. 12 to 14 at Drake University, will honor student leaders and faculty or staff members who are an example to others.

“We serve as a link from our residence hall association and Department of Residence life to the regional and national affiliates,” said Renee Watkins, leadership adviser to IRHA and president of the Residence Hall Leadership Organization.

“This meeting is a bonding experience form of leadership training that involves a lot of spirit and shows the pride of those involved in their school,” Watkins said. “We meet to talk about how to affiliate new schools with

MACURH.

“We also discuss programs that our school provides and exchange ideas with other universities for new events that would demonstrate leadership.”

Twelve ISU students and two advisers will attend the meeting.

Watkins was involved in bringing the Res Film Festival to Iowa State, an event that was started at Georgia Tech. The university will allow 20 teams of students to rent cameras and put together a movie. An awards night will be held in February. Organizers will meet for the first time in January.

“It’s a great way to show leadership within a group of people and still have fun taking part in a community event,” Watkins said.

IRHA also agreed to not approve a bill, proposed last week, that would have appropriated funds for 60 students to attend a dinner and performance.

“It is unfair to ask for $1,080 when only 60 students would benefit from the event,” said Ross Kelderman, president of the Union Drive Association and author of the bill.
