Cyclones score early and often, dominate Texas Tech matchup

After her third goal of the weekend, junior Amy Flores shrugged her shoulders and smiled — a sign that the Cyclones were on fire.
Flores’ two goals helped the ISU women’s soccer team complete a weekend sweep in conference play Sunday as the Cyclones dominated Texas Tech 3-0.
Iowa State scored early and often against the Red Raiders (3-9, 0-4), helping the Cyclones (5-7, 2-2) climb back to .500 in conference play. Iowa State won four of six games during its three-week homestand.
“I got two great [opportunities],” Flores said.
Flores scored first for Iowa State, recording the first of the game three minutes into the first half. Her second goal came at 30:10 after Red Raider goalie Tina Rincon bobbled the ball and Flores recovered it.
Kristina Baumann had buried the other goal for Iowa State at seven minutes earlier. Baumann was set up off a foul kick, beat Rincon to the ball and slipped it into the net.
“I was so excited,” Baumann said. “I knew I just had to get a touch on it, and I had to slide in to get in front of her.”
Iowa State established the lead early in the game, something that it has failed to do throughout many of its games this season.
“That seems like the first time we’ve done that,” Baumann said. “It is much easier to knock the ball around and keep possession.”
The Cyclones dominated on offense, outshooting Texas Tech 15-8.
“Overall, I think it was a great team effort,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We stuck with the game plan; we did a good job; we had a lot of opportunities and got a few goals.”
Iowa State was led by its youth early in the season, and now the upperclassmen are stepping up and contributing as well. Flores and Baumann combined for four of the five goals this weekend.
“Kristina is so dangerous. She’s so explosive,” Hornbacher said. “Flores has done a great job of getting where she needs to in the box. She’s dominant in the air.”
Friday night, Iowa State recorded its first conference win, defeating Baylor in a double overtime thriller after a second-half Cyclone rally.
“[The team] showed a lot of heart and a lot of passion,” Hornbacher said. “Going into overtime, I knew that they would just leave it all on the field.”
Trailing 1-0 with just over 20 minutes left in the contest, freshman Beth Passman stole the ball at midfield, made a move around the Baylor defense and found sophomore Kate Kirwan wide open. Kirwan lofted the ball to teammate Erin Witte, who headed it into the net.
“Kate made an incredible cross pass,” Witte said. “As it was coming to me I told myself, ‘this has to go in.”‘
Iowa State outshot Baylor 1-0 in the first overtime, but came up empty-handed.
In the second overtime, Flores logged her first goal of the season, putting in a pass from Kelly Burke with 5:31 left. The crowd of 116 that braved the 36-degree wind chill erupted into a frenzy as Cyclone teammates rushed the field.
“It was a beautiful pass; all I could do was put it in,” Flores said. “It was an easy finish.”
Tiffany Boshers recorded the lone goal of the game for Baylor (4-5-1, 1-2).
“I have all the respect in the world for Baylor,” Flores said. “They’re a great team.”
After a day off Friday, Iowa State returns to conference play at Missouri on Sunday afternoon.
