LETTER: A smorgasbord of local issues
October 20, 2004
This is a commentary on everything going on in the Daily editorial section and around campus at the local level.
First, Sophia Magill should be allowed to write in to the Daily as long as she doesn’t affix her title, which she did not do. One does not lose the right to free speech by being elected president of any body, but the right to free expression should be more restricted when representing the ISU community.
I never wrote anything in to the Daily while I was on GSB, lest someone decide that it would be fun to reprimand me for my personal stance on any issue.
Secondly, the Ames smoking ban is unnecessary. The advantage of free enterprise is that if one sees a sign that the place is non-smoking, they can choose to go there or not depending on the person. They already have signs that state that an establishment is smoke-free and that accommodates this. A wiser ordinance would be to make sure that people don’t smoke at the entrances of smoke-free buildings because this defeats the purpose of the buildings being smoke-free.
Thirdly, the current county auditor (Mosiman) is not a very good bureaucrat, which is what that position entails. My experience has been that I have had to register to vote three times and have only voted twice.
Regardless of party position, all students should vote for Jim Hutter, as he would do a much better job in this role.
Mosiman did not even provide the New Voters Project with the requisite number of voter registration forms required, and, thus, GSB had to allocate student fees to pay for something which should be free and paid for by the county auditor’s office.
