No serious injuries result from three-car accident

A three-car accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 and Riverside Drive north of Ames on Tuesday resulted in no serious injuries, Story County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

Dave Lekwa, field services sergeant for Story County, said only one of the three drivers was taken to the hospital as a result of the incident, where she was treated for “non life-threatening injuries.”

Officials said the accident occurred when a green 1995 Ford Windstar, driven by Gayle Rouse, collided with a car going south on Highway 69. The second car, an 1985 Plymouth Grand Fury, driven by James Dickson of Ames, was stopped at the three-way intersection, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear so he could turn east on Riverside.

Rouse rear-ended Dickson, sending his vehicle through the intersection and into the path of oncoming northbound traffic. There, his vehicle collided with a 2000 Plymouth Neon, driven by Mary Derby, of Jewell.

Lekwa said the Neon’s airbags had failed to deploy, meaning the impact had not been head-on.

Firefighters from both Ames and Gilbert converged on the scene, along with Ames police and Story County deputies.

Upon arrival, they found that Derby’s driver’s side door had been badly damaged, so much so that the woman could not exit the car.

“The door was pretty well bunched up around her,” said Chief John Adams of the Gilbert Fire Department.

Gilbert and Ames firefighters had to cut through the door of Derby’s car in order to free her. She was then transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center, where she was treated for facial lacerations.

Adams said Derby had been talking and alert when firefighters and police arrived.

Rouse, Lekwa said, was issued a citation for failing to stop at a clear and assured distance.

Although this is the first accident to occur at the intersection of 69 and Riverside, accidents have happened at other intersections near Ada Hayden Park, Adams said.

In the past week and a half, he said, the department has been called to the area for three accidents, one involving a school bus.
