For projects director, GSB is all about vibes

Government of the Student Body leaders dished out Star Bars, Bomb Pops and assorted ice cream treats last Wednesday at “Cool Down with GSB,” one of the first events for new GSB Director of Student Projects Victoria Brenton.

“I’d say it made a positive impact. Students got some ice cream and met and spoke to GSB members,” Brenton said. “There were good vibrations — it’s all about the positive vibes.”

Brenton’s position is one of four new cabinet positions created by GSB President Sophia Magill early in her term to address areas that weren’t addressed by previous cabinets. Magill said the reorganization should give students more say in what GSB does.

Magill said the purpose of the director of student projects position is to work with both student groups and individual students on getting the word out about their events through GSB senate meetings and other avenues. She said Brenton will also invite students and groups to GSB senate meetings to comment on legislation that directly impacts them.

Another duty of the position is to create events, such as “Cool Down with GSB,” that increase both the awareness of GSB among students and the interaction shared between the two, Magill said.

“It’s about getting students connected, so we aren’t just users of the campus, but citizens of the campus,” Magill said.

Magill said Brenton’s position may evolve to include the creation of partnerships with community groups off campus as well.

Brenton said she was motivated to interview for a cabinet position because of her past experiences.

“I’ve always been interested in student government,” Brenton said. “I participated in student government in high school, worked on Sophie’s campaign, and I went to a [GSB] senate meeting and found it to be an interesting process.”

Brenton said that her role centers on event planning and that she sees herself spending four to 12 hours a week on her position. She said her main goal is to get everyone involved in GSB.

Because the position is new, Brenton said, she has some flexibility to mold what the director of student projects role will become. She said she is already planning for the future, including making a fact sheet to inform students what is and is not legal at house parties off campus where alcohol is involved.

She said she is also working with Louis Kishkunas, GSB chief of staff, on a list with information of student groups so that GSB can communicate with groups more effectively.
