IRHA denounces ‘Bricktown’ name

Members of the Inter-Residence Hall Association aren’t fond of the name “Bricktown” in reference to parts of the Old Richardson Court Association.

The group will present a bill at Thursday’s meeting recommending that the term be eliminated.

Bricktown refers to Birch-Welch-Roberts, Barton, Lyon and Freeman Halls, said Heather Reid, vice president of Barton, Lyon and Freeman halls.

Reid said she thinks the term may have originated from community adviser meetings since the Old RCA community advisers all report to the same hall director now.

She said the problem with grouping these buildings together under one name is that they are so diverse and different from one another. Birch-Welch-Roberts is an all-male area, while Lyon and Freeman halls are co-ed.

The meeting will also include the second read of the “Police are Our Friends, Not Our Floormates” resolution regarding the police liaison program in the Department of Residence.

Keith Wilbur, Union Drive Association treasurer, and Ross Kelderman, UDA president, wrote the resolution in an effort to minimize the patrolling aspect of the program and to encourage more relationship building between liaisons and residents.

The issue will be up for debate and voted on Thursday. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the Union Drive Community Center.
