Government relations cabinet position would connect ISU Ambassadors, GSB
August 31, 2004
A senate order to create a new government relations cabinet position will be discussed at Wednesday’s Government of the Student Body senate meeting.
The order notifies the senate of GSB President Sophia Magill’s nomination of Jared Bartel, director of ISU Ambassadors, to the deputy director of government relations position, which would be a cabinet position. The nomination must be approved by the senate.
Bartel would be serving under the director of government relations, Angela Groh.
ISU Ambassadors is an effort Groh created last year, where students are selected to represent Iowa State’s interests to elected officials, Groh said.
The ambassadors also send updates and news items about ISU students to students’ hometown media outlets. The goal is to have an ISU student represent each of Iowa’s 99 counties as well as one for each surrounding state. But, with only 40 members, Groh said she is looking for students to apply to be ambassadors via the GSB Web site.
As director of ISU Ambassadors, Groh said that Bartel is in charge of the group but does not have the ability to go to GSB cabinet meetings and inform cabinet members on the happenings of the group.
“I’ve been serving as the go-between between the cabinet and Jared,” Groh said.
If Bartel becomes an official cabinet member, Groh said, her mediating role would be eliminated, and Bartel would be able to directly address the cabinet, making the process more efficient. She said Bartel’s role, other than the ability to directly communicate with the cabinet, wouldn’t be changed.
“It just cuts down the logistic mess,” Groh said.
Both Groh and Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger, who authored the senate order, said Bartel deserves the position.
“He’s worked with the ambassadors program since it started last spring,” Alliger said.
“I think he’s got a good leadership style, has worked well with the organization, and I like his ideas.”
In addition to this order, the senate will also look at another order that would approve procedure changes for the Story County Analysis of Social Services Evaluation Team, or ASSET, which helps coordinate the planning of human services among its sponsoring organizations.
Both the city of Ames and GSB sponsor the team. There will also be a funding bill that would appropriate money to help the mountaineering club purchase ice climbing equipment.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
