LETTER: Civil unions are the answer

This letter is in response to Jason Funk’s Sept. 21 article “Same-sex marriage isn’t a right.”

We will never get everyone to agree on gay marriage, but what’s the harm in letting homosexuals be legally joined? Why not create a civilly binding contract with exactly the same legal properties as a traditional marriage? With this contract, homosexual couples could enjoy the same legal and financial benefits as heterosexual couples.

Whether or not a religion decides to bless the contract is a completely different issue.

I would like to point out that an issue being “biblically wrong” should have absolutely no bearing on political standing. One of the ideals upon which our great nation was founded is the separation of church and state. We cannot pick and choose when or where they are separated.
