Iowa State (3-5-0) snapped its four-game losing streak this weekend at the Nike Invitational tournament, defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-1 Friday and Youngstown State 1-0 Sunday.
The second win came in dramatic fashion when Iowa State scored with nine seconds left to break a 0-0 tie.
Kate Kirwan netted the only goal of the game, scoring on a free kick from the top of the goalie’s box.
Iowa State had already been denied on one penalty shot earlier in the game, but Kirwan said she knew the outcome of her shot would be different.
“I knew that was my shot,” Kirwan said. “Some of the girls knew that too, so I just stepped up and they let me take it.”
The Penguin goalkeeper, Mia Railing, made a total of 10 saves. The Cyclones tallied a season-high 25 shots on net and didn’t allow a single one.
Iowa State dominated offensively, playing most of the game in its offensive zone.
Despite putting quality shots on net and not scoring, morale never wavered, said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher.
“It takes persistence and just believing that we’re going to get that goal,” she said. “We knew we were going to get that goal; we just didn’t know when it was going to happen.”
On Friday, freshman Erin Witte scored both goals in a 2-1 win for the Cyclones, which were also the first two of her collegiate career.
Witte put the ball in first at 4:57 of the first half, when a rebound from a corner kick came to her. She shot it to the back of the net through a crowd of defenders.
“That was a hard fight for the ball,” Witte said.
For the game, the ISU defense held the Panthers to four shots.
“Our defense was solid,” head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. “They had each other covered. They really were solid and weathered the storm when UW-M had opportunities.”
In the second half, the Panthers evened the score at the 62-minute mark when Elicia Scaife shot the ball past ISU goalie Jo Haig. But three minutes later, Witte headed in a high pass from teammate Jess Villhauer to regain the lead.
“We practiced this all week, set plays,” Witte said. “I was just relieved that it went in, because it was such a hard fight for the ball.”
The Cyclones start conference play at home Friday against Colorado.
