GSB Senate will discuss funding for organizations

Money will be on the minds of the Government of the Student Body Senate at its meeting Wednesday, as more than $10,000 worth of funding bills will be discussed.

The Iowa State Soccer Club is seeking $3,562.50 in GSB funding for the purchase of four soccer goals, and the Iowa State Mountaineering Club will be looking to earn $5,260.44 for the purchase of ice climbing equipment. Both club’s bills will be up for a final vote Wednesday.

Another funding bill is asking for $2,000 to be contributed to Cy’s 50th Birthday Kick-off, which is replacing the Fall Gala during Homecoming festivities. It will be put through its first read before it may be voted to go to the finance committee for further review.

GSB Finance Director Kristi Kramer said it is normal for groups to request a higher volume of funding in the weeks following the summer.

Kramer said the amount of funding bills per senate meeting would probably decrease as groups become more focused on the special allocations funding sessions in October and November.

With the number of funding bills up for analysis during a time when funds are lower than normal, Kramer said senators need to be aware of GSB’s financial situation when they vote on bills.

Kramer said the soccer club bill was approved to the senate with ‘no bias’ by the finance committee, which she said means the committee is neither for it or against it, but it has questions it would like to have answered. She said the committee had some concerns.

Shawn Montague, vice speaker of the senate, supports the mountaineering club bill because GSB gave the club funding last year, but because of a club budgeting error, they couldn’t use the funds.

“I like to see the club has done some fund-raising and … that they have put forth an effort and proved they need it,” Montague said.

Kramer said the club was budgeted money for the use of vans to travel to competitions, as well as the purchase of ice climbing equipment. However, when GSB phased out vans and went to the use of Chevrolet Suburbans, the club faced budgetary problems because Suburbans carry fewer passengers and the club needed to purchase the use of more automobiles than originally planned, Kramer said. By the time the club attempted to buy the same ice climbing equipment it is requesting funding for Wednesday, she said they had no more money to buy the equipment.

In addition to the funding bills, a vote will take place on a resolution supporting the first draft of Iowa State’s 2005-10 Strategic Plan.
