Forums feature Iowa House hopefuls
September 20, 2004
Candidates for Iowa House District 45 have begun the next stage of their campaigns.
The first two in a series of candidate forums will be held Tuesday to address various concerns area residents may have. From 10 a.m. to noon, the candidates will be at 2200 Hamilton Drive, and from 6 to 8 p.m., a forum will be held at St. John’s By the Campus Episcopal Church, 2338 Lincoln Way.
Local candidates Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, a Democrat and Randy Woodbury, a Republican will be accompanied by federal candidates Art Small, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, and Paul Johnson, Democratic candidate for Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District.
Andrew Smalley, Story County Republicans chairman, said the forums would have a set number of questions as well as a chance for questions from the audience. In addition to the forums, Woodbury said he was involved in a number of other activities, including previous fund-raising activities and door-knocking efforts.
“My goal is to hit every house in the district,” he said.
Many of the activities Woodbury has engaged in are part of a larger effort to get voters out, something Smalley said will be the key to the election.
“The candidates have done their thing; now it’s up to the party activists to do their part,” he said.
Jan Bauer, chairwoman of the Story County Democrats, said her party has seen a lot of similar activities.
On Saturday, Wessel-Kroeschell began her fund-raising campaign in the lead up to the November election.
It’s all an attempt by the campaigns to gain an edge in what’s seen as a close election.
