Liaison program discussed again … next week

Once again, the newly implemented police liaison program was the main topic at the weekly Inter-Residence Hall Association meeting.

Union Drive Association Treasurer Keith Wilbur and UDA President Ross Kelderman presented their resolution “The Police Are Our Friends, But Not Our Floormates” at Thursday night’s IRHA meeting.

“Basically, we’re trying to find a common ground between what we saw as the best part of the police actually being in the building – which is community outreach and actually being available to students who want to talk to them – while at the same time trying to get away from the other problems we were having before, where police were, in some people’s opinion, infringing on personal rights of privacy,” Wilbur said.

The resolution, which is considered a policy recommendation for the Department of Residence, states that “IRHA discourages liaisons from walking rounds in halls with or without accompanying student staff.”

The resolution will be open for debate at the next IRHA meeting.

In other business:

* Matthew Toner, director of information technology, said he is still working on an e-mail list to send out information about different topics to residents.

* Drew Larson, IRHA president, said the advertising committee will be assisting Kari Hancock, program coordinator for the DOR, in finding ways to market the Department of Residence in the dining centers on campus.

* Larson also said that there was a new executive order stating that all organizations requesting funding from IRHA discretionary or special project accounts would be required to include a campus organization accounting office account number and the funding bill.

“This just elaborates in more detail what the by-laws already require,” Larson said.

* Larson also reported that Government of the Student Body President Sophia Magill requested partial funding from IRHA for the Homecoming Fall Gala if GSB can’t solely fund the entire event. He said there would be further discussion on this at a later date.

* A member of the New Voters Project asked for feedback from IRHA on the presentations it had been giving at hall meetings.

More discussion about the New Voters Project will be held at the next IRHA meeting.

* RCA president Ryan King said Free Friday Flicks will be in Design 101 this year. Upcoming movies include: “Kill Bill Volume 2,” “The Passion of the Christ,” “The Terminal,” “Shrek 2,” “Anchorman,” “Spider-Man 2” and “The Bourne Supremacy.”
