GSB ‘seating frenzy’ establishes six new members in positions

The Government of the Student Body senate nearly played a game of musical chairs at its meeting Wednesday night.

GSB Vice President William Rock characterized the meeting as a “seating frenzy,” as much of the 40-minute meeting was dedicated to seating six students to various positions within GSB.

David Miles, junior in aerospace engineering, and Ryan Doll, junior in political science, were seated as senators representing the Richardson Court and Towers Residence Associations, respectively.

Also, Jared Bartel, sophomore in mechanical engineering, was approved by the senate as the new deputy director of government relations. Bartel is the director of ISU Ambassadors, a group that selects students to present a positive image of Iowa State to their hometown media outlets, and voices ISU students’ concerns to Iowa lawmakers.

Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger said that Bartel’s nomination would allow him to attend GSB cabinet meetings and communicate directly with the cabinet. Before the nomination, Alliger said, Bartel couldn’t attend cabinet meetings and had to send information to Director of Government Relations Angela Groh for it to be heard by the cabinet.

GSB’s Finance Committee also came out of the meeting with empty seats filled, as Finance Director Kristi Kramer’s nominees for two at-large senator positions and one alternate at-large senator position were approved. Nate Johansen, sophomore in agricultural business, and Jeremy Schweitzer, senior in English, will be at-large senators, and Matt Durham, junior in finance, will be the alternate.

“We feel really good about the decisions we made,” Kramer said.

In addition to the seating orders, GSB senator Tony Borich authored a resolution supporting the first draft of Iowa State’s 2005-10 Strategic Plan. Borich said that GSB should make sure its opinion of the plan is known to students.

“We feel the Government of the Student Body should provide a response to the strategic plan,” Borich said.

A funding bill for the Iowa State Mountaineering Club was passed on to the finance committee for further review, and a bill approving policy changes for the Story County Analysis of Social Services Evaluation Team — a GSB-sponsored organization that advises various groups on human services programs — will be placed on the agenda next week for final approval.
