Volleyball team trampled by Longhorns

An unstoppable Texas offense was too much for the Iowa State volleyball team to handle in a 3-0 loss in Austin on Wednesday.

The Longhorns cemented their claim to a No. 22 ranking. With scores of 30-17, 30-11 and 30-22, Texas upped its flawless record to 10-0.

“Our serving was not tough or competitive. We didn’t keep Texas out of their offensive rhythm because of our easy serves,” Crum said. “They just weren’t good enough.”

Iowa State, now 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12, tallied 13 service errors. After falling behind 19-11 in the third game, Iowa State attempted to stage a comeback, but four misplaced serves kept the Cyclones out of the running.

The Cyclones’ second mistake was poor ball handling, which led to limited opportunities on their own offense. Iowa State mustered only a .059 hitting percentage, while the Longhorns ran up a .440 percentage on the match.

“We usually pass much better than that, and we are usually more consistent,” Crum said.

Leading the Longhorn charge was senior hitter Mira Topic, who finished with 22 kills. She attempted 36, which gave her a .472 average for the match. Topic currently leads the Big 12 in total hitting percentage.

Aiding Topic was senior Bethany Howden, who connected on 11 kills, and a team-high 13 kills was the effort from freshman libero Alyson Jennings.

In addition to impeccable ball handling, Texas reigned on the nets in blocking, taking down numerous ISU kill attempts.

Shining through for the Cyclones was junior middle Katie Kruenegel, who pounded nine kills and stuffed back two blocks. Brittany Dalager continued her consistent defense with 10 digs, and junior setter Amanda Craig acquired 23 assists.

Iowa State will get the chance to redeem itself Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum with another shot at a Texan team. Texas Tech arrives in Ames with a 5-4 record and matches Iowa State at 1-2 in the Big 12.

The Red Raiders are paced by junior hitter Desiree Batista and senior Kelly Johnson, as well as freshman Amy Charlebois. Despite the 3-1 win in the two teams’ last outing, Crum knows the competition is there.

“This is a team that has improved from last year. They can run a faster tempo with lots of quick movement,” Crum said. “If we serve easy, we’ll make them look good offensively, so what we really need to do is maintain that.”
