Cyclones go 2-1 in tournament

Despite opening the University of Texas-San Antonio tournament on a sour note, the ISU volleyball team rebounded Saturday night to clinch a win and a 2-1 showing.

The Cyclones split matches on Friday night, succumbing to Rice in its first match.

Iowa State started with a win of 30-24, but Rice muscled its way back with consecutive scores of 30-27, 30-26 and 31-29.

This was the first loss of the season for the Cyclone squad, who were 4-0 going into the tournament.

Middle blockers Ashlie McWee and Katie Jessen pounded 13 kills each.

Nicole Lorenzen had another double-double performance with 12 kills and 14 digs.

Defensively, Brittany Dalager had a team-high 20 digs, followed closely by Katie Churm, who recorded 19.

In the second match, Iowa State swept Prairie A&M in three games. The Cyclones dominated 30-16, 30-8 and 30-22.

McWee led the offense with 10 kills, and newcomer Meghan Ferrie added nine kills on 18 attempts. The Cyclones outhit the Panthers .411-.019.

The biggest win of the tournament was Saturday night as Iowa State rallied in game five to defeat UTSA. Games one and two were Cyclone-dominated in scores of 30-16 and 30-25.

Though the Cyclones outnumbered the Roadrunners in every category, they lost games three and four, 30-28 and 30-24.

Iowa State took game five 15-8.

Lorenzen got another double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs. She also recorded five serving aces.

Junior setter Amanda Craig ended the match with a season-high 64 assists.

Dalager upped her weekend high digging by saving 23, while Churm and Christine Smeele added 15 apiece.

Ferrie led all Cyclones in hitting with a percentage of .392, attacking for 12 kills in the match. McWee recorded 16 for a .300 percentage, as well as nine block assists.

Iowa State rests at 6-1 record headed into Big 12 play at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at home against Texas A&M.
